Sedona Luxury Real Estate Homes Condos

posted by Rex Manz on 21 May 2009

What is it that defines a Sedona luxury property?  One criteria that is at the top of everyone’s list are the views afforded.  We have all heard the adage “location, location, location” — and its true.  Views come about as the result of the location.  Perhaps the property is located next to U.S. Forest Service land or elevated on a hillside.  For some people, this is the only criteria since everything else can be renovated or otherwise changed.

Security is also high on many people’s lists.  The gated community has changed with the evolution of technology.  Early gated communities had manned gatehouses.  You identified yourself and your purpose and you were allowed entry.  Expensive to operate.  Today, gated communities are mostly unmanned using keypad, voice or magnetic card activation.  They operate 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.  If anything, solicitors are minimized.

Destination resorts are always popular since once you arrive, every amentity and activity is close at hand.  You don’t have to travel far.  Exclusive luxury residential subdivisions will commonly offer onsite amenties such as a clubhouse, exercise room, tennis, children’s playground, a park, swimming pool, etc..  While important to some, these amentities are not universally sought after by everyone.

A golf course is the ultimate amentity.  People that purchase a home on the golf course do so because they enjoy golf.  You are either a golfer or you are not.

Exclusivity can be the sole function of price.  If the land is expensive, then only expensive homes will be built.  No one will build a $200,000 home on a lot that cost $750,000.  Exclusivity is a hallmark of luxury without a doubt.  If you own a $2,000,000 home, you wish to be surrounded by like-value homes.

Sedona Red Rock Country Fever

posted by Rex Manz on 11 April 2009

Sedona Red Rock Fever is a common ailment among Sedona visitors, particularily first-time visitors.  Its symptoms include tranquility, joy, peace of mind and smiling.  Upon leaving Sedona for the return trip home, you initially feel sadness until you begin planning your return visit.  The cure is simple — return to Sedona!

While the diagnosis is easy to make, the underlying cause varies from person-to-person.  For some, it is the sheer physical beauty of Sedona.  For others, it is triggered by the release of one’s everyday routine and worries.  The majesty of Sedona’s Red Rock formations seems to bring life to a standstill.

For still others, its emotional.  You may experience a sense of having been here before.  You may sense the presence of other people’s emotions.  Sedona is often experienced as a land of energies.  The Native Americans that lived in the Sedona area considered Sedona a sacred place where celebratory ceremonies were conducted.  Perhaps that’s it, Sedona makes you want to celebrate!

All That Is Sedona Golf

posted by Rex Manz on 09 April 2009

For many people, owning Sedona real estate situated on a golf course is a dream retirement home, vacation retreat or second home.  Ranging from luxury homes to more modestly priced condos, there are many Sedona AZ golf properties available.  While most Sedona golf course properties are commonly whole-ownership, there are some luxury townhomes and condos that are available as fractional-ownership commonly referred to as timeshare vacation resort ownership or timeshare vacation clubs.

In almost every instance, golf courses are constructed as an amentity to attract customers.  The most common purpose is the sale of homes or lots on a golf course.  Second most common is as an amentity for a destination resort hotel.  With the development of the timeshare industry has come the development of timeshare resorts with a golf course – often referred to as vacation club golf resorts.  All such golf courses can be found in the Sedona area.

The physical characteristics of golf courses has changed notably over the years as the result of consumer expectations, financial constrains and environmental considerations.  The oldest of Sedona’s golf courses reflect consumer expectations of the times — grass everywhere.  Sedona is considered arid high-desert where grass is not native and water is a precious resource.  The most recent golf course development consists of narrow fairways winding through natural desert with water conservation a driving factor.  This approach retains more of the natural beauty of Sedona’s Red Rocks.

The location of Sedona’s golf courses is a factor of land availability and the cost of land.  There is only one golf course in the City of Sedona.  Three golf courses are located in the Village of Oak Creek and one golf course is located in Coconino County just outside of Sedona’s city limits.  Below is a quick synopsis of each of the Sedona AZ golf courses.

Poco Diablo Resort Golf Course — The only golf course located within Sedona, this course is small and compact.  Only 9-holes covering just 777-yards with a par of 27.  It is a part of the Poco Diablo Resort and is primarily available to lodging guests with public access as well.  It was designed by Arthur Jack Snyder and constructed in 1980.  It is located at 1752 Hwy 179 in Sedona within 2-miles of the geograhic-center of Sedona.  Serious golfers beware.

Seven Canyons Golf Resort — The newest Sedona golf course, Seven Canyons is a 200-acre development located outside of Sedona in Coconino County surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land.  It is a private-equity golf club with 395 memberships.  There are 32 single-family homes sites and numberous golf villas with whole-ownership and fractional-ownership options.  The golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf with 18-holes over 6,746 yards with a par 70.  It is a desert-design with narrow fairways and some postage-stamp greens.  The golf course opened in 2002 and has garnered an impressive number of awards from golf magazines and organizations.  It is located at 755 Golf Club Way approximately 4-miles from Sedona city center.

Oakcreek Country Club — This is an old traditional golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones and built in 1962.  It features 18-holes over 6,824-yards for a par 72.  The golf course is surrounded by private residences and is open to the public.  It is located at 690 Bell Rock Blvd in the Village of Oak Creek about 6-miles from the center of Sedona.

Canyon Mesa Country Club — Designed by Arthur Jack Snyder, Canyon Mesa opened in 1984.  The 9-hole, par 28 course covers 1,265-yards from the longest tee.  Snyder also designed the 777-yard Poco Diable course 4-years earlier.  The Canyon Mesa course was intended as an amentity to the golf homesites that it afforded.  It is located at 500 Jacks Canyon Rd in the Village of Oak Creek about 6-miles from the center of Sedona.

Sedona Golf Resort — The Sedona Course is a full-sized 18-hole par 71 6,646-yard golf course opened in 1988.  It is the principle amentity for the surrounding golf homesites and lots developed by SunCor Development.  The course was designed by Gary Panks.  It is located at 35 Ridge Trail Dr in the Village of Oak Creek approximately 7-miles from the center of Sedona.

If you are looking for a golf experience, this should help.  If you are looking to purchase a Sedona AZ golf homesite, a fairway home, a golf villa, condo or townhouse, your starting-point will be to establish your purchase budget.  If you are looking for a vacation golf retreat or second home, perhaps you might consider fractional-ownership.

Luca’s Red Rock Crossing Review

posted by Rex Manz on 27 March 2009

One of the most photographed areas is the Red Rock Crossing Park.  The backdrop of Cathedral Rock formation and Oak Creek is not to be missed.  There are many benefits of this park from my perspective — that of a 3-year-old named Luca.  Water many times means bridges.  The more rustic and natural, the better.  A couple of logs is fine by me.  Sometimes its nice to have an older brother to help.

I got across the log bridge without getting wet, but I decided to ask for forgiveness not permission the next go around.  The trick is to get right to the edge of the creek before jumping.  Once you are already wet, your parents abandon the rules and you can keep jumping.

Aside from bridges, water and stones, you find lots of sticks near a creek.  The bigger the stick, the better.  You can splash your stick in the water or chase people with your stick.  If you are lucky, your older brother and mother get their own sticks and everyone can chase each other around.

Overall, Red Rock Crossing is great!

Sedona Huckaby Trail Hike

posted by Rex Manz on 13 March 2009

As you leave Sedona traveling north on Hwy 89A, you pass over the Midgley Bridge.  Drive over the bridge and the trailhead parking lot is to your left.  The trail passes under the bridge and begins the hike down to Oak Creek. The bridge is used by the Sedona fire department for training purposes on occassion.

After passing under the bridge you will be welcomed with a scenic view of Oak Creek below.  The trail begins its descent down to Oak Creek.

The hike is 2.5-miles round-trip.  It is a great summer hike with the creek as your reward.  Yes, you can hike along Oak Creek with many opportunities to get wet if you chose.  Enjoy!

Sedona Devil’s Bridge Hike

posted by Rex Manz on 16 February 2009

All of Sedona’s hikes are scenic, while a few have a distinct destination.  The Devil’s Bridge hike is a scenic destination hike.

You will need to travel a short distance on an unpaved road in getting to the trail head.  Upon arrival, you will find a small parking area at the trail head.  Get out of the car and get ready to hike!  The hike is about a mile one-way and moderate in difficulty because of some elevation climb.

As you round a curve in the trail, you will come across Devil’s Bridge as you look-up.  Its one of those formations that you have to look at again because it doesn’t seem possible.  With all of the red rock surrounding the bridge formation, it is easy to have the optical illusion that it doesn’t exist because of the varying depth perception.

When you have arrived at the top of the formation, you realize just how large it is.  As you dare to walk onto it, you realize just how small it is.  There are those brave souls that enjoy their morning yoga in inspiring places.

Sedona Traffic Roundabouts

posted by Rex Manz on 11 February 2009

It is human-nature to initially complain about change.  If change leads to progress, acceptance soon follows.  Sedona’s traffic circles are no exception.  Safety and cost were the underlying reasons that traffic circles were used in place of conventional 4-way-stop intersections.

Federal Highway Administration has published statistices that show the following advantages over conventional intersections — 90% reduction in fatalities, 76% reduction in injuries, 35% reduction in pedestrian accidents, and 50% increased traffic capacity.

Cost savings begin with the physical construction and on-going maintenance of traffic signals associated with conventional intersections.  It requires electricity to power traffic signals as an on-going cost as well.  For the consumer, less stop-and-go driving reduces fuel consumption.

Have you ever seen a “beautiful” conventional intersection?  Traffic roundabouts can be landscaped and beautified far more easily than a conventional intersection.

No matter how you approach the comparison, it would seem that traffic circles do represent progress.

Sedona Sunset Park

posted by Rex Manz on 28 January 2009

The newest City of Sedona park is Sunset Park.  Open daily, the park is primarily focused on toddler-aged children with its playground equipment.  Covered pavilions provide shelter from rain and the summer sun.  Large grassy areas provide space for kite-flying, kickball and just running around for kids.

Visitors that stop-by the park with their children are always amazed at the setting and the incredible red rock views. They are often heard to remark “To think that this is a public park!”

Adults are not forgotten in Sunset Park.  Tucked-away in the far corner of the park are tennis courts.
